Holy Communion: No Questions
|
Holy Communion at
Trinity is available to all who desire it, no questions asked.
We believe that the Communion table belongs to God, not to us.
For this reason, we believe that we have no right to set conditions
which must be met, or requirements which must be observed.
Holy Communion is one of the most powerful meetings of the human and
the divine. We believe that we are all strengthened when another
soul accepts God's invitation to come to the table.
We do not ask if you are a member of Trinity. We do not ask if
you endorsed the passage of some piece of legislation. We do not
ask if you voted for a particular candidate. We do not ask how
old you are. We do not ask if you have been "saved". We do
not ask if you have been confirmed. We just invite you: join us at the
table.
Trinity is an Episcopal church worshipping in an Anglo-Catholic
style. If you are familiar with Roman Catholic liturgy, you will
find yourself struck by the familiarity of our service.
At the same time, however, you will notice a marked difference.
Our congregation is very diverse. We use incense at every
service. At sung services, we sing many parts of the Mass,
including the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.
Some of us still kneel at the communion rail. You'll never miss
your favorite verse of a hymn: we sing them all. And frequently
we use the unaltered, original poetry. There is no rule that we
have to be done in 60 minutes; some of us are happy to spend all
morning at church. Some of us like to worship in a more
contemplative style and then spend the morning in our gardens, so our
7:30am spoken Mass is over around 8:15.
Which brings us back to the point at hand. Joining us is your
decision. Come and see if our service speaks to you. Don't
expect to be left alone, however; we're a friendly bunch. We will
invite you to coffee after the 10am Mass. We'll invite you to our
Book Club, to our picnic, to our summer outing to Shakespeare at
Boscobel. We'll probably ask if you're new in town. Answer
or don't; as you feel comfortable.
If you want to talk about deeper, more spiritual issues, we've got that
too. Join us for one of our Adult Christian Education
programs. Talk about, or just listen to, what sin means in our
lives, what the examples of the saints can teach us, what the history
of the church is, where the Bible comes from. Our tradition
recognizes that our minds are a blessing from God and that we have a
responsibility to use them.
If you're looking for a spirit-filled, spiritual family to join, or a
spirit-filled, spiritual place to worship God, come visit us at Trinity.
